Steer Clear of These Four Foods Possibly Harmful to Prostate Health
By Dr. David Samadi
Prostate health should be a priority for men, given that one in six will face prostate cancer in their lifetime. While there’s no guarantee that diet alone can prevent prostate cancer, making wise dietary choices can tilt the odds in one’s favor by steering clear of certain foods that may negatively impact prostate health.
Here are four types of foods that have been suggested to have a potential link to prostate cancer when consumed in excess:
High-Fat Red Meat and Processed Meat
Various studies have found that fatty cuts of red and processed meats could increase the risk of prostate cancer. Examples include fatty beef, pork, lunch meats, hot dogs, and sausages. Cooking meat at high temperatures (grilling), can lead to the formation of carcinogens like heterocyclic amines (HCAs), which have been associated with various types of cancers.
Alternative Options:
- Skinless chicken breast
- Lean cuts of red meat (choose cuts stating loin or round)
- Fresh or canned fish like tuna, salmon, or sardines
- Beans and legumes including lentils, chickpeas, and kidney beans
- Nuts and nut butters
Alcohol
Excessive alcohol consumption has an association with a higher risk of advanced prostate cancer. Research from the Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial revealed that heavy drinkers faced twice the risk compared to moderate drinkers. Heavy drinking is indulging in more than three drinks per day or over 20 drinks per week.
Healthier Choices:
- Water or sparkling water with fresh fruit juice
- Non-alcoholic beers or wine
- Sparkling juice
- Tea or coffee
Saturated and Trans Fats
These fats, commonly found in red meat, high-fat dairy products, baked goods, and processed foods, have been linked to heart disease and may also contribute to prostate cancer risk. While not all studies confirm this association, reducing intake is advisable for overall health.
Healthier Alternatives:
- Fatty fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids
- Avocados
- Nuts
- Olive oil
- Seeds
Sugary Foods and Refined Carbohydrates
Cancer cells thrive on sugar, so reducing intake of sugary foods and beverages is prudent. Refined carbohydrates, such as white rice and products made with white flour, lack fiber and essential nutrients, potentially increasing prostate cancer risk.
Better Choices:
- Fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables
- Whole grains like 100% whole wheat bread and brown rice
Takeaway message
By making mindful dietary choices and incorporating healthier alternatives, men can take proactive steps that supports their prostate health and helps reduce their risk of prostate cancer. Remember, a colorful and balanced diet is key to overall well-being.
