At 15, after the 1979 revolution, he and his 12-year-old brother were forced to leave home and start over on their own. Origins: Dr. Samadi’s Life Story
Persian Jews have lived in Iran for nearly three millennia, through long periods of peace and others of persecution. Under the secular Pahlavi dynasty, which rose to power in 1925, the Jewish community once again found stability. With the 1979 Iranian Revolution, however, that changed, and many Jewish families faced an uncertain future.
Childhood and Coming to America
In 1979, David Samadi and his younger brother Dan left Iran for Belgium. About six months later they moved to North London, and in 1984 they finally immigrated to the United States. Their father, a businessman, and their mother were not permitted to leave Iran, and their five-year-old sister Heidi stayed behind with them.
Their parents paid for the boys’ schooling and living expenses in advance, and the brothers attended a private school near the boarding house where they lived. Though they missed their family deeply and could speak with their parents only occasionally, both boys worked hard to honor them. They excelled in science, and it was during these years that David first dreamed of becoming a doctor, a goal that helped him through the loneliness of life on his own.
Education
In New York, life grew brighter for both brothers. David finished high school in Roslyn, earned a biochemistry degree at Stony Brook University, and by 1990 had completed his first year at Stony Brook School of Medicine with honors. He earned his MD in 1994, went on to urology training at Montefiore Medical Center, and completed a urologic oncology fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering in 2001. Read more about his education.
Family
Dr. Samadi is married to Sahar Danielpour, and together they have two children, a son, Alex, and a daughter, Jasmine. With more than 25 years of experience treating prostate cancer, Dr. Samadi is known as one of New York City’s leading urologists. From 1990 to 1994, he volunteered in the emergency room at Stony Brook Hospital. He later served as Director of Laparoscopic Surgery at Columbia Presbyterian, Chief of Robotic Surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center from 2011 to 2013, and Urologic Oncology Expert and Robotic Surgeon at Lenox Hill Hospital.
