Seven self-care habits men should practice to get and stay healthy

It’s a well-known fact that men are often not the best at taking care of their health. Sometimes, they may feel like going to the doctor is unmanly, or they may dislike feeling like they’ve lost control. Other times, they may simply prefer to ignore any potential problems. However, it’s important for men to take control of their health and be proactive about their well-being. Rather than feeling like they need to “man up,” they should recognize that being responsible for their health is a sign of strength.

Self-care habits men should practice to be healthy

On average, men live about five years less than women. There are many factors that affect this, including higher risk-taking behavior and physically taxing jobs that put a lot of strain on their bodies. While we all want men to live long and healthy lives, it can be challenging to keep illness and disease at bay when men ignore their health.

Here are seven ways for a man to take charge of his health and well-being. Ultimately, he must decide what actions he is willing to take to ensure optimal energy, stamina, and lifelong good health, regardless of any challenges that life may present.

Eat well to be well

How we feed ourselves matters.  What we eat significantly impacts our health. Men, it’s important to plan your meals carefully. Half of your plate should include fruits and vegetables, and include more beans, nuts, and seeds. Choose lean protein sources such as fish, chicken, low-fat dairy, and whole grains. These foods will help you feel your best and reduce the risk of diseases.

It’s best to avoid soda, sugary foods and beverages, fried foods, hot dogs, and burgers. These foods contribute to weight gain and inflammation, which can increase the risk of diseases. Check out the list of ten worst foods for prostate health.

Exercise regularly

In order to keep your weight under control to prevent chronic diseases such as hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, and cancer, it is important for men to exercise regularly. Physical activity should be a priority and excuses should be kept to a minimum. It is recommended to schedule at least 30 minutes of exercise daily, or exercise moderately for at least 150 minutes per week, for at least five days. You should choose activities that you enjoy and combine aerobic, strength training, and flexibility exercises to ensure a well-rounded workout.

Never start smoking or quit if they already do

Smoking is a harmful habit that has no redeeming health qualities. It can be hard to quit, and it can age you while increasing your risk of developing lung cancer, emphysema, bronchitis, and COPD. Similarly, chewing tobacco can lead to oral cavity cancers and ruin your teeth. Instead of engaging in these bad habits, seek help from your physician to quit smoking. You will feel much better when you’re no longer trapped by this unhealthy habit.

Practice good oral hygiene

Taking care of our teeth is essential to maintain good oral health. Our teeth play a vital role in chewing food, speaking properly, and giving us a confident smile. Maintaining good oral hygiene requires daily brushing, flossing, and using an oral mouthwash twice a day. Regular visits to the dentist every six months are also important to detect and prevent any dental problems. A little time invested in daily tooth care can help keep your natural teeth healthy for many years to come.

Schedule an annual physical

As a man, it is crucial to visit your physician annually to monitor or manage any health conditions you may have. Your age, family history, and current health determine what tests are necessary. At the minimum, every man should track their blood pressure, cholesterol level, and undergo a digital rectal exam. After turning 40, you should get a PSA test, and after 50, a colonoscopy. Even if you don’t enjoy the results, these tests can save your life.

Embrace cleanliness

Washing your hands frequently, disinfecting high-touch surfaces, and using your elbow to cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing can prevent the spread of germs and keep you healthy.

Take time to relax

Many men tend to be workaholics, which can take a toll on their health. If you work non-stop without taking breaks, you may experience various symptoms such as body aches, low energy levels, lack of enthusiasm, high blood pressure, and elevated blood sugar levels. Therefore, it’s essential to find activities that you enjoy doing outside of work. It could be anything from golfing, fishing, hunting, hiking, or other recreational activities that help you rest, relax, and rejuvenate. Don’t overlook the importance of taking a break from work, as it is crucial to maintain good health and a balanced lifestyle.
