Dominican Republic Awareness About Prostate Cancer Treatment and SMART Surgery Technique Share on:
Dr. Samadi who has performed over 3,200 robotic prostatectomy surgeries and strongly believes in sharing his operating skills and knowledge, also concludes that SMART Surgery is complex and challenging, and should only be performed by experienced surgeons. Samadi says, “Surgical volume, consistency, and focus are paramount to achieve the Treatment Trifecta I described earlier. People must remember that the surgeon performs the surgery, not the robot. Da Vinci robotic technology alone is never enough.”Robotic Surgery Expert Dr. David Samadi Travels to the Dominican Republic to Raise Awareness About Prostate Cancer Treatment and His SMART Surgery Technique
International prostate cancer treatment expert, Dr. David Samadi, traveled to the Dominican Republic this week to speak at a conference about his revolutionary, SMART Surgery (Samadi Modified Advanced Robotic Technique) for prostate cancer surgery. At the conference, which was held at the Hospital Metropolitano Santiago (HOMS), Dr. Samadi talked about what he called “the operating room of the future” and made a call to the importance of countries and doctors working together “to learn from each other so that we may fight the war against prostate cancer more effectively.” The trip is another step forward in Dr. Samadi’s journey to arm nations with the knowledge and skill to make death from prostate cancer a thing of the past.
Prostate cancer is nearly symptomless until the disease has become aggressive
“The biggest challenge,” said Dr. Samadi, speaking to a mixed group of medical experts, students and cancer patients, “is that for many men, prostate cancer is nearly symptomless until the disease has become aggressive and life threatening. This means that as early as the age of 40, men with a high risk of prostate cancer must have regular screenings by a qualified urologic oncologist to stay ahead of a disease that is known as the ‘silent killer.’ Early detection and treatment, despite all of the technological advances we have made is our greatest weapon against the disease.”
Dr. Samadi went on to extol the virtues of his SMART Surgery citing operation times that are less than 2 hours, a bloodless operating field, high cancer cure rates, and recovery of sexual and urinary functions in less than one year. Said Samadi, “SMART Surgery provides dissection angles that were not achievable before with open surgery or laparoscopic prostatectomy instruments allowing patients to achieve continence recovery rates of 96% and potency rates of 85% within one year or less, as well as a 97% cancer cure rate, something I call a ‘Treatment Trifecta,’” he explains. The Dominican Republic now joins Israel on a list of countries that Dr. Samadi has transferred his prostate cancer treatment expertise tousing SMART Surgery methods.
In the future, prostate cancer surgeries can be performed remotely
“We can and must learn from one another and embrace the opportunities that modern technology affords us,” proclaimed Dr. Samadi, who is also Vice Chairman, Department of Urology, and Chief of Robotics and Minimally Invasive Surgery at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. He painted a futuristic picture where prostate cancer surgeries can be performed remotely or collaboratively from across a continent and bodies of water using robotic surgery technology, secured data connections, and real time information sharing infrastructure, stating, “From my office in Manhattan, New York, I could be performing the surgery myself remotely with a team onsite, or advising a surgical team here in Santiago as they perform a robotic prostatectomy procedure. With shared monitor screens I could indicate things to watch for as the surgery unfolds or perhaps I could learn from the methods they employ. Knowledge is power and if we share it with one another in this way, we will become stronger.”
